The Acute Care Surgery team at UNM Hospital consists of surgeons who specialize in trauma surgery, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care. UNM Acute Care Surgeons provide comprehensive care of severely injured trauma patients and patients with surgical emergencies, including their evaluation in the emergency department, the operative management of acute surgical issues, and their subsequent supportive care in the intensive care unit.
UNM Hospital the only Level 1 trauma center and tertiary surgical referral center serving injured and critically ill surgical patients for the state of New Mexico. As the state's only academic medical center as well as the only American College of Surgeons verified Level 1 trauma center, UNM Acute Care Surgery cares for a large, diverse population with complex and urgent surgical needs over a large geographic catchment area. Our trauma program evaluates over 9,000 patients and admits over 3,000 trauma patients each year with a penetrating trauma rate of around 20% and a high volume of operative cases. Our Emergency General Surgery service performs around 1300 operations annually, serving both the local population and serving as a referral site for complex patients from throughout the state and surrounding areas.

The Acute Care Surgery Division serves as a cornerstone of the UNM General Surgery Residency and hosts both a 1-year ACGME accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and a 2-year AAST-accredited Acute Care Surgery Fellowship.
